If someone took your child, how soon would you stop looking for her? If someone accused your best friend of a terrible crime, when would you stop defending him?
Seven years after Joe Tyler's daughter Elizabeth was abducted, he hasn't stopped looking for answers, and he hasn't forgotten the friend who stood by him as he lost his wife, his home, and his career in his search. Now he's been brought back to San Diego by the news that this friend has been arrested for beating up a teenage girl - a girl not much older than Elizabeth would be now.
Joe is convinced Chuck Winslow is innocent, but Chuck is in a coma and can't explain what happened. And the more Joe hears about what Chuck's been up to in the years he's been gone, the less Joe recognizes his old friend. To find out the truth, he will have to face his ex-wife, his former bosses, and a hometown full of wealth, lies, and illicit privilege. When Chuck's accuser goes missing, Joe must decide where his loyalties truly lie.

The story was good but it was a spin off of the beginning story. The beginning story was left as a cliff hanger at the end. It appears the next couple of books are spin offs with cliff hangers. The end doesn't show up until about 4 books are bought and when a happy joining of the family still ends in a disaster a few books later. I just bought a series to find out the end. So, I think I will pass on this one.Product details

Thread of Hope The Joe Tyler Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Jeff Shelby Chris Andrew Ciulla Books Reviews
This was definitely a page-turner, I could barely put the book down. And I look forward to reading the next one. As far as criticism go the only notes I have are that there were a couple of grammatical errors and the main character's inner monologue were frequently redundant. For example, when something angered him, he'd often explain his reasons for anger in a paragraph and then react in anger. Thats a bit verbose. Instead, one simple sentence stating his reason for anger followed by an angry reaction would have been sufficient. Additionally, it's nice to see a variety of ethnicities represented in literature and I didn't find that in this book. Could be that I overlooked it, though.
All in all, an exciting read!
Threads of Hope (The Joe Tyler Series, Book 1) by Jeff Shelby
I think that this is the first time that I've started writing the review before I even finished reading the book. It's that good. The plot is complex and well layered and the characters are believable, but it's the interwoven threads of anger and pain that make this book so incredible. It would be impossible to write a book about a missing child without those elements, but the authenticity of these emotions got under my skin and leaked out of my eyes multiple times while reading. This is every parent's nightmare and it was written well enough to send a shiver down my spine.
This book is part of a series, so there is an overarching story line that connects each funished book. No cliffhanger here but I'm pretty sure that you'll want to hear more about Joe and his search for Elizabeth.
Coronado High School of today's day and age is for the rich and well-connected. Private detective, Joe Tyler, was an alumni from a time when it was just a regular high school on the San Diego island. He was now hired by families of missing children. Having lost his child eight years earlier, he felt it was his duty. However, something else brought him back to his home town of San Diego and his alma-mater, and it wasn't just a missing child but a battered one. Meredith, a high school student and star athlete, accused his childhood friend and her coach, of inappropriate behavior. Chuck now lay unconscious in a hospital. Although it had been years since he'd lost touch with his friend, he couldn't believe he would hurt anyone. He was going to get to the bottom of it. Someone had to because no one was taking Chuck's side.
Soon, incriminating evidence starts to surface. A reality that the posh island town of Coronado did not see coming. It's up to Joe to reveal what is really taking place. What he finds rattles nerves and brings new meaning to living with privilege. Who was behind the missing teenager....or better yet, why was she missing?
~ fast paced and intense. So well written, it had me cheering for the good guy in my head! Reminds me of Harlon Coben and Pat Conroy with the basketball references...but without the humor.
This book was recommended to me by a friend who is an bestselling author! When I saw the cover with the Coronado Bay Bridge I knew I had to read it. I live in beautiful San Diego and I love the city and county. I enjoyed Jeff Shelby's first hand knowledge of the area.
The story is centered in Coronado and Jeff has captured the essence of the city. I spent my preteen and early adolescent summers hanging with my besties at the yacht club having fun! The schools in Coronado are ranked first in the state. 98% of the families have at least one parent with a degree from a 4 year college and homes cost in the millions! The Thread of Hope is a little edgy even for Coronado! Over-the-top yes, but not totally unfounded.
The story is an emotional journey about missing children and the demolition of lives in it's wake! The story unfolds as Joe Tyler gathers glaring inconsistencies in the investigation of a missing student. As a parent, high school teacher and coach, I was devastated by the story and sobbed out loud as I read! So much heartache, guilt and teen angst! This book is an amazing, fast paced and heartbreaking examination of secrets, intrigue and helplessness; comprehending"generation z" and the inevitable complications between parents and teens!
Despite what you've read in some of the one star reviews, this book does not end with a cliffhanger. The main storyline has a beginning, middle, and end. You'll be perfectly satisfied that there has been a resolution to the case at hand. However, the author cleverly intertwines sub-plots that carry over to the next book. At the end of book one, I was pleased that Joe Tyler was able to solve the case, vindicate his friend, and put an end to a nasty criminal enterprise as well. However, I was left dying to know whether Joe would ever find his missing daughter, so I immediately bought and read book number two. The end of that book did not leave me hanging, but I was dying to know what happened next, so I immediately bought and read book number three. Once again, a satisfying ending with an open door to know what happens in book number four. I am now reading book number five, anxiously wondering which of the many intriguing sub-plots will make me want to read book number six.
I like a book to complete the story and not leave you hanging and required to buy another one to see what happens.
So, I think I will pass on this one.
